We have embarked on many exciting projects and have added to our list of benefits. We trust that you enjoy what we have brought to the table.

We host wonderful breakfasts, wine tasting and executive dinners for CEO’s, Directors and senior industry players at various restaurants around the country and thank all our members who attend and support these events.

We discuss pertinent issues relating to the industry and tackle these head on with our strong team of 6 staff.  We have consulted with industry and our collaborated associations with regards to issues like: Eskom’s plan, the minimum wage bill, the consumer Bill, The Landlord best practices plan and other areas that industry may need RASA to act on.  Our appointed attorney’s Leon Botha and The Liquor Buzniz Consultants  draw attention to these concerns surrounding restaurants, franchisees, franchisors as well as all QSR restaurants.  Input is regularly forwarded on behalf of RASA to yourselves.

We are currently and ongoing tackling the issue of high rentals and uncompetitive lease clauses with key property developers and shopping centre owners.  We are working hand in hand with industry partners and players to establish a code of conduct moving forward on rentals and lease content.

A brief introduction into RASA (Restaurant Association of South Africa)

RASA is a non-profit organization that was formed in 2004 to act in the interest of the South African restaurateur and to ensure that there was a lobby and a voice to speak on his/her behalf. RASA is managed by RASA Management Services a private company that provides services for RASA.  The sole purpose of RASA is to represent; develop; educate and ensure sustainability for the restaurant industry.

RASA is the port of call by government for all consultations relating to the restaurant industry and includes the transformation of the industry through job creation, skills development and capacity building.

RASA is the information and communications hub that introduces and maintain ethical business and employment practices and introduces compliance to a regulatory framework.

RASA members include Independent Restaurants, Fast Food Outlets, Bed & Breakfast (B&B’s), Coffee Shops; Casual Dining; Hospital Canteens; Mobile Restaurants; QSR’s and include membership for the major franchise groups namely Spur steak ranches, Mugg and Bean, Ocean Basket, Adega, The Brazen Head, Global Wrapps, Wiesenhoff, Fournews and many more.

RASA operates as an independent business from offices in Fourways and we currently employ 6 staff, a sub-contacted legal division and have collaborated agreements with 12 complimenting associations.

We have an honorary Board of Directors of 12 key industry players and a working Exco board of 4 members and 2 Directors.  Services are sub-contracted via a SLA to an independent company.

Our membership base extends to 5 Patron Sponsors, 5 Corporate Sponsors, 20 Accredited Suppliers, 24 Friends of the Association, 12 Lifelong Members and 1 800 Members.

To Represent and Promote the Restaurant Industry

Restaurants need a powerful voice before Government and provincial regulatory agencies. RASA promotes a pro-restaurant agenda on critical restaurant issues like smoking, liquor legislation, food safety, and employment practices. Through our members we will continue to battle anti-restaurant initiatives while promoting responsible business practices within our members.

The South African Restaurant Association will Endeavour to promote dining out, encourage restaurant careers, publicize the industry's commitment to food safety, commitment to fair labor practices and highlight the restaurant industry's impact on the economy and local communities.

To Gather and Offer Access to Industry Information

It is our aim to develop reports and publications through our research to deliver the information that helps restaurateurs manage their businesses better.

Through our website, monthly newsletters, road shows and breakfasts we seek to offer all connected with our industry the opportunity to interact and share ideas and opinions in an open forum.

RASA respects and encourages the individuality of our industry and offers a non-confrontational arena for discussion and debate.


The Restaurant Association of South Africa has, along with key specialists in the industry, developed a number of policies with clear and measurable guidelines to assist the industry in self-regulation and standardization. Restaurants that comply with the guidelines for the various policies may display the relevant accreditation on their premises.

Properties that adhere to the RASA policies are allowed to display a specially adapted version of South African Tourism’s Welcome logo and will be listed as an accredited restaurant on www.southafrica.net, the official website of South African Tourism. Listings on this website will also carry the various RASA policy endorsements and will be plotted on the SA Tourism GPS database which is supplied to various role players in the digital mapping and navigation arena.

Creating awareness and educating the public on the minimum standards that should be expected from the restaurant industry is a key element to the RASA policies program.

Policies Developed Thus Far Include:


Safe dining is absolutely crucial to the successful operation of any food service business. Not only is it a legal obligation for every restaurant to comply with statutory health and safety guidelines, it is also an ethical responsibility towards diners. The RASA Dine Safe policy covers aspects like food safety and hygiene practices, using accredited suppliers and adequate pest control. It also includes the RASA Healthy Diner Food Nutrition guidelines.


Restaurant clientele have the right to expect to feel safe within the restaurant environment. From having visible security guards and CCTV to putting control measures in place to prevent credit card fraud, this policy partners with a number of anti-crime and tourism safety initiatives to maximize its reach in crime prevention. Partners in the RASA Sit Safe policy are: the Tourism Safety Initiative (TSI), the Violent Organized Crime Work Group (VOC), Consumer Goods Council of South Africa (CGCSA), Business against Crime (BAC) and Visible Policing. The RASA Sit Safe policy also takes into account staff verification through REDB, the RASA Employee Database.


Restaurants that offer children’s entertainment and play facilities have to ensure that the facilities and equipment are safe,

Clean, and well maintained. Access should be controlled and the child minders on duty are expected to be trained in child minding, basic first aid, and CPR. The necessary disclaimers should be in place and the restaurant is expected to publicize a customer feedback line. The RASA Play Safe policy is supported by Fleetwood Adventure Playgrounds and SAFIC.


Diners have the right to expect good service at any restaurant. Establishments displaying the RASA Skill Safe accreditation have sent their staff to the RASA Training Academy which offers training to managers, waitrons, barmen, baristas, cooks, and child minders. The RASA Skill Safe policy also requires that restaurants exercise good labor practices.


Restaurants displaying this accreditation have had their menu endorsed by RASA. This means that the pricing levels have been benchmarked against industry standards and that RASA has certified that the pricing displayed on the menu is fair. RASA Healthy Diner food nutrition guidelines have also been taken into account. Properties displaying the RASA Price Safe accreditation will not inflate prices during periods of sudden increase in customer volumes and will thus not partake in unfair exploitation of visitors to South Africa.

We extend the same standards to all our customers, suppliers and associates.


We always conduct our own services honestly and honorably, and expect our clients and suppliers to do the same. Our advice, strategic assistance and the same methods imparted through our training, take proper account of ethical considerations, together with the protection and enhancement of moral position of our clients and suppliers.

Duty of Care

Our actions and advice will always conform to relevant law, and we believe that all businesses and organizations, including this consultancy, should avoid causing any adverse effect on the human rights of people in the organizations we deal with, the local and wider environments, and the well-being of society at large.


Our contract will usually be in form of a detailed proposal or MOU, including aims, activities, costs, timescales and deliverables. The quality of our service and the value of our support provide the only true basis for continuity. We always try to meet our clients’ contractual requirements, and particularly for situations where an external funding provider requires more official parameters and controls.


Our fees are always competitive for what we provide, which is high quality, tailored and specialized.  We do not generally offer arbitrary discounts; generally a reduction in price is only enabled by reducing the level or extent of services to be delivered. That said, we always try to propose solutions which accommodate our Client’s available budgets and timescales. Wherever possible we agree our fees and basis of charges clearly in advance, so that we and our clients can plan reliably for what lies ahead, how it is to be achieved and financially justified


We aim to be as fair as possible in the way that our services are charged and require payment upfront. We make no attempt to charge interest on late payments, so we expect payments to be made when agreed. Our terms are generally paid upfront annually.

Intellectual property and moral rights

We retain the moral rights in, and the ownership of all intellectual property that we create unless agreed otherwise in advance with our clients. In return we respect the moral and intellectual copyright vested in our clients’ intellectual property

Quality of Assurance

We maintain the quality of what we do through constant ongoing review with our clients of all aims, activities, outcomes and the cost-effectiveness of every activity. We encourage regular review meetings and provide regular progress reports. This consultancy has been accredited under a number of quality assurance schemes. Further details are available on request.

We conduct all of our activities professionally and with integrity. We take great care to be completely objective in our judgment and any recommendations that we give, so that issues are never influenced by other than the best and proper interests of our clients.

Suppliers can furthermore contribute Editorial that is of value to the restaurants under the various sections of the book.

The cost per advert full page A5 is R5 700.00/R11 400.00 (Inclusive of VAT) and this includes a supporting page of editorial.

An initial 5000 copies is distributed to member-restaurants throughout South Africa including major Franchise Brands and independent.

A DIGITAL COPY will be available on our website and a link will be sent out to non-member restaurants and a number of other business related websites. Advertisers will receive the link as well as a hardcopy.
