Do you know how many beer brands there are available in South Africa?

Writing a book on beer
I have always been fascinated by the idea of writing a book.


Imagine writing a novel, stuck in a mountain cabin for months, just writing....

Although the idea of staying in a mountain cabin (for a short stay) appeals to me. I know that I will never want to write a novel.

Writing about the things I have learned selling beers for the last twenty years, makes more sense to me.

The idea of compiling the ABC of Beers, originates fromThe Keg & Thistle days in Florida Road, Durban.

The biggest novelty at the Keg & Thistle in the 1990's, was to "Drink your way around the World". Briefly, this meant drinking a number beers from different countries around the world to earn an engraved plaque on the wall of your local Keg Pub.

To me, the ABC of Beers started as a challenge. The challenge was to find at least one beer, available in South Africa, for each letter of the alphabet.

The objective of this exercise is to highlight the variety of beers available in the country.

Now I am on my next project - compiling an updated version of BJ Lankwarden's Beer Drinkers Guide to Beers in South Africa. This is a huge task: I started counting late last night and eventually called it a night at 250 beers.

A is for Amstel
For many years South Africa's best selling premium beer brand

B is for Budweiser
The worlds most recognised beer brand

C is for Corona
Corona Extra is the leading beer brand in Mexico, the number one imported beer in the US and the most popular Mexican beer in the world.

D is for Duvel
Duvel, a Belgian Strong Pale Ale style beer, is exported to more than 40 countries. But I think, the best place to enjoy a Duvel must be at a street cafe in Belgium.

F is for Faxe
Faxe, the great Danish beer brand from Royal Unibrew, has been in SA for nearly 20 years.

G is for Guinness
I was introduced to ”the black stuff” during my first ever visit to an Irish pub in 1993, at the Irish Pub in Berlin. I remember that Guinness launched on tap during the 2007 Rugby World Cup in South Africa you can watch the original TV Ad here: youtu.be/e3m2ofxLUy0

H is for Hansa
Hansa Pilsner one of the top three beer brands in South Africa, held a market share of 21% in 2012.

I is for ITA Tequila Ale
ITA is an Imperial Ale that gets its finishing touches by maturing the beer in Tequila Añejo oak barrels. ITA is imported by Mexican Imports.

J is for Jack Black
Jack took Cape Town by storm and helped create the current craft beer movement.

K is for Kilkenny Draught
Kilkenny is a nitrogenated Irish cream ale which originated in Kilkenny, Ireland. Its heritage dates back to the 14th century.

L is for Lion Lager…
Remembered for the biggest re-branding fail in the history of the SA beer industry, Lion Lager, once SAB’s top beer brand is no longer brewed in South Africa. The original Lion Lager is still available in neighbouring Zimbabwe.

M is for Miller.
Miller Genuine Draft (MGD) is the international flagship brand of the Miller Brewing Company in the USA. The brand is currently available in 80 countries, and was introduced to the premium beer market in South Africa by SAB in 2003.

N is for Native Ale
Native Ale is a popular craft beer brewed for Darling Brew.

O is for Old Wobbly
Old Wobbly is a Strong Lager. The first brew of Mitchell’s Old Wobbly was brewed in September 1990 and had an alcohol level of 12%. This was planned to be a once off brew but this Lager grew quickly in popularity. Because of the cost of tax on beer the product soon became too expensive and the amount of alcohol within the beer had to be reduced.

P is for Paulaner
Paulaner used to have a Brauhaus at the V & A Waterfront in Cape Town, and I regularly made Paulaner Brauhaus my first stop when visiting the city. Paulaner is now imported by German Goods and Bhatia Interntational.

Q is for Quills
Quills Blonde Ale is brewed at the Porcupine Quills Porcupine Quills brewery at the 1000 Hills Chef School, in Botha’s Hill.

R is for Raven Stout
Mitchell’s Brewery started brewing Raven Stout in 1987. The Raven symbolises most characteristics of the stout: proud, brave, strong, clever and most important, black.

S is for Samuel Adams Boston Lager
When Jim left his job to start a brewery, people told him he was crazy. After tasting that first batch of Samuel Adams Boston Lager in his kitchen, he knew he had something that just might prove the doubters wrong. It wasn’t like any beer out there. Full flavoured with hops and malt yet balanced and complex…and the American craft beer revolution began. Unfortunately Jim Koch’s beers are not available in South Africa.

T is for Tafel Lager
South African beer drinker have long been great supporters of Namibia’s Windhoek Draught, Lager and Light beers, but most Namibians still prefer Tafel Lager. Tafel Lager is a great beer available at a very competitive price (probably the cheapest imported beer available in South Africa)

U is for Urbock
Urbock is a traditional dark beer known as “bock” beer. A traditional bock beer is ideal for drinking on cold winter nights. Urbock is only brewed once per year and is therefore only available in May each year, in limited quantity.

V is for Van Hunks
Not only is this beer very drinkable, Van Hunks Pumpkin Ale certainly has shelf appeal. Every time I look at all the wonderful bottles on display in the craft beer fridge of my local Tops store, I want to take a pumpkin ale home.

W is for Windhoek
Windhoek is a well know by beer brand in South Africa – but that was not the case when I started selling beers twenty years ago. When I hear all the craft beer evangelists touting their wares, I am reminded of the early 90's when the Windhoek and Bavaria sales teams branded all SAB beers as undrinkable chemical brews, in order to sell more of their “real beers”.

X is for X

X is for Queensland’s most famous beer……XXXX Bitter
Although not available in South Africa, I had to use it in my list as I could not find any other X-beers.
XXXX brand was first introduced in 1924 and is a throwback to the long standing tradition of using Xs to indicate the strength of an ale.

Y is for Young NuWorld imports great brands such as Young’s Bitter, Young’s Special London Ale and Young’s Double Chocolate Stout, from the UK’s largest private brewing company, Wells & Young,

Z is for Zulu The Zululand Brewery owns the Zulu Blonde beer brand.
In South Africa, Zulu Blonde is only available at the George Hotel, Eshowe (and in very limited quantities at Liquor City, Groenkloof).

Last year, we held an inaugural "Global Restaurant Association Executive Summit" in Chicago coinciding with the National Restaurant Association Restaurant, Hotel-Motel Show. The Summit identified common industry issues - in supply chain management, food safety, increasing labor costs, government regulations, and more.

We ask that you join us to build on what we started in 2013 at our "Second Global Restaurant Association Executive Summit" on Monday, May 19. We will officially launch the Summit on Sunday, May 18 at 17:00 with a reception; then we will convene on Monday, May 19, from 8:00 to 16:00 with a series of expert speakers and open forums. Simultaneous translation will be provided.

The Summit will again coincide with the annual industry show (being held May 17 to May 20 in Chicago, Illinois). Show access will be included in Summit registration.

We ask that each country limit participation to two associations (one delegate per association) or two delegates from a single association, in order for us to accommodate a wide global representation in our limited space.

McDonald’s SA opens 200th restaurant

McDonald’s South Africa is celebrating reaching the 200 restaurant mark with the opening of its newest outlet, McDonald’s Oxford in East London. Some 52 local jobs have been created as a result of the opening of the restaurant. McDonald’s Oxford is built from light steel and fibre cement, which reduces material wastage by 30% and transport costs by 80%. Light steel frame building (LSFB) restaurants cool down and re-heat faster than conventional buildings, making them a more comfortable environment for customers. The carbon footprint of the building is also significantly reduced. The building is fully endorsed by the Green council.

McDonald’s Oxford is a double story building with a Drive-Thru and 21 parking bays, 10 of which are underground. The innovative building is built on stilts to accommodate the parking bays and in another McDonald’s South Africa first, the kitchen is equipped with a 12m conveyor belt to transport food to the Drive-Thru presenter’s window on the ground floor. The restaurant seats 57 people, split between 45 seats inside and 12 seats on the balcony. In addition to the Drive-Thru service, customers will enjoy a range of offerings around the clock, including McDonald’s food, free Wifi internet access, family-friendly amenities like children’s Playplace and party rooms and McCafe. Greg Solomon, MD of McDonald’s South Africa, says: “We seek to put our customers first, and we look forward to building our brand and our business responsibly as part of our growth strategy in South Africa, and to making a positive impact in the local community. South Africa offers tremendous opportunity to grow our brand and this translates into job opportunities and skills transfer given by McDonald’s rigorous operational training programme.”

- First quick service restaurant to open 24 hours a day and seven days a week
- First to introduce hand-held breakfast
- First to use LSFB (introduced in June 2013 at its restaurant in Goodwood, Cape Town)
McDonald’s South Africa opened its first restaurant in South Africa in November 1995. Today, McDonald’s operates 200 restaurants in all nine provinces. McDonald’s South Africa employs over 10 000 local people across the country.
Currently more than 80% of all food served in McDonald’s restaurants is produced by local South African suppliers to McDonald’s highest quality standards.

Search on for pizza champion

Entries are now open for the annual Global Pizza Challenge in South Africa. Contestants can win cash prizes and the winner will receive a trip to Melbourne, Australia to compete in the international Global Pizza Challenge finals against entrants from 15 other countries.

The competition is open to pizza makers around the country in restaurants, stand-alone pizzerias, takeaway outlets and hotels. Judges are looking for the most creative and tasty pizza recipes in one or more of five categories: – poultry or meat,
- seafood
- vegetarian,
- speciality or dessert,
- Tabasco.

The Tabasco category carries its own prize for the winner of R10 000 in cash from sponsor Tabasco.
The event is held under the auspices of the South African Chefs Association and all recipes submitted will be assessed by a panel of internationally-recognised chefs and judged on their originality, balance, creativity, as well as “excitement factor”. About 30 finalists will be selected and invited to recreate their recipes at the Global Pizza Challenge event, to be held during Hostex in Cape Town from 21 to 23 May 2014.

Entry forms and additional information on the competition can be found on www.globalpizzachallenge.com or the Global Pizza Challenge Facebook page. All entries from would-be contestants must be in by 10 May 2014. The aim of the competition is to “celebrate pizza making as a distinguished, passionate and noble livelihood and help advance pizza’s quality, diversity and popularity, globally.” Last year’s overall winner was Tammy Henton (pictured above) who was then a la carte chef at the Michelangelo Hotel in Sandton, Johannesburg. Her winning dish was a sticky pork pizza. In addition to Tabasco as the main sponsor, other sponsors involved in the competition include Hostex, Unilever Food Solutions and MJ Event Gear.

Martin Kobald (also pictured above), Global Pizza Challenge organiser, honorary president of the South African Chefs Assocaition and UN World Food Program Ambassador – Africa, says the innovation and expertise of the world-class South African culinary industry is always evident at the finals. Every year the pizza benchmark in the country is upped a notch or two by the intriguing range of delicious pizzas in every category, he notes, adding: “We look forward to a record-breaking number of exciting entries and wish every potential pizza champion the best of luck.”
